The Āditya-Śayana (Ravi-Śayana) Vow: Night-Meal Discipline, Nakṣatra Limb-Worship, and the Unity of Sūrya and Śiva

यथा न देवाः श्रेयांसं त्वदन्यमनघं विदुः । तथा मामुद्धराशेष दुःखसंसारसागरात्

yathā na devāḥ śreyāṃsaṃ tvadanyamanaghaṃ viduḥ | tathā māmuddharāśeṣa duḥkhasaṃsārasāgarāt

A devotee/supplicant addressing the Lord (likely Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa) in prayer

Concept: Exclusive refuge in the Supreme Benefactor: recognizing no higher protector than the Lord and seeking deliverance from saṃsāra’s sorrow.

Application: When overwhelmed, practice surrender: name the problem honestly, ask for guidance, and take the next dharmic step while trusting the Lord’s protection.

Primary Rasa: karuna

Secondary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A lone devotee stands at the edge of a vast, dark ocean whose waves are shaped like faces of sorrow and fleeting desires; hands raised in surrender, eyes wet with longing. Above the waters, Nārāyaṇa appears as a calm, luminous presence, extending a hand like a bridge of light, turning the storm into stillness.","primary_figures":["Viṣṇu/Nārāyaṇa","devotee supplicant"],"setting":"Mythic shoreline of the ‘saṃsāra ocean’ with symbolic waves, distant lightning, and a descending pillar of divine light.","lighting_mood":"divine radiance","color_palette":["sapphire blue","storm gray","moon white","golden aura","deep violet"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Nārāyaṇa with gold-leaf halo and ornate crown emerging above stylized waves; devotee kneeling at the shore; heavy gold embellishment on the Lord’s ornaments and the bridge-like ray of light, rich maroon and indigo background, traditional iconography with conch and discus.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical night seascape with delicate brushwork, subtle lightning, a serene blue-skinned Viṣṇu in the sky, devotee rendered with refined emotion, soft gradients and poetic naturalism, minimal but expressive symbolism in the waves.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined Viṣṇu with prominent eyes and elaborate jewelry, stylized ocean patterns, strong red-yellow-green accents against deep blue, temple-wall compositional symmetry emphasizing protection and grace.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central Viṣṇu figure framed by lotus borders; stylized waves as repeating motifs, intricate floral patterns transforming darkness into devotion, deep indigo cloth with gold highlights and white linework, symmetrical devotional layout."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"devotional","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"emotional","sound_elements":["low temple bell","distant conch shell","soft thunder","ocean-like drone (tanpura)","brief silences for surrender"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: त्वदन्यमनघं = त्वत् + अन्यम् + अनघम्; मामुद्धराशेष = माम् + उद्धर + अशेष; दुःखसंसारसागरात् = दुःख-संसार-सागरात् (समास).

FAQs

It teaches śaraṇāgati (seeking refuge): acknowledging the Lord as the supreme source of welfare and praying for complete deliverance from duḥkha-filled saṃsāra.

By framing liberation as the Lord’s grace in response to humble, trusting prayer—devotion expressed as dependence on the divine rescuer.

Humility and reliance on divine goodness: the speaker admits personal vulnerability to suffering and seeks total upliftment rather than partial relief.
