Yayāti Episode: Indra’s Anxiety, the Messenger Motif, and a Discourse on Time (Kāla) and Karma

सुकर्मोवाच । कालोऽयं कर्मयुक्तस्तु यो नरैः समुपासितः । कालस्तु प्रेरयेत्कर्म न तं कालः करोति सः

sukarmovāca | kālo'yaṃ karmayuktastu yo naraiḥ samupāsitaḥ | kālastu prerayetkarma na taṃ kālaḥ karoti saḥ

Sukarma

Concept: Time impels action but does not itself ‘do’ the action; agency operates through beings and karma, under the impetus of kāla.

Application: Replace fatalism with responsible surrender: accept timing, but own choices; act as a servant of Viṣṇu, offering deeds while recognizing the larger impetus of time.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Sukarma, a composed sage, sits beneath a banyan tree teaching a small circle of listeners; above them floats a translucent wheel labeled Kāla, sending gentle rays that touch the hands of people engaged in various actions—ploughing, giving alms, chanting—showing ‘impulsion’ without direct ‘doing’. The scene balances inevitability with moral responsibility, framed by a calm, Vaishnava devotional atmosphere.","primary_figures":["Sukarma (sage)","Listeners (disciples/seekers)","Symbolic Kāla-cakra","Householders performing karma"],"setting":"Forest āśrama with banyan tree, simple altar, and distant Viṣṇu emblem (śaṅkha-cakra) carved on a stone.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["warm amber","leaf green","sandalwood beige","sky blue","copper"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Sukarma seated on a decorated pedestal under a stylized banyan; disciples in attentive poses; a gold-leaf kāla-cakra hovering above with radiating lines; small vignettes of karmic acts around the border; rich reds/greens with ornate gold detailing and traditional iconographic symmetry.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate āśrama scene with refined faces and delicate textiles; soft dawn wash; a faint translucent time-wheel in the sky; tiny narrative vignettes of actions in the margins; cool greens and blues with gentle shading and fine linework.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: Sukarma with bold outlines and expressive eyes; simplified disciples; prominent circular kāla symbol above; action-scenes rendered as icon panels; strong red-yellow-green palette with temple-wall composition.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: central teaching scene framed by ornate floral borders; circular kāla medallion above; surrounding panels show devotees performing seva, dāna, and japa; lotus motifs and deep blue background with gold highlights; subtle Viṣṇu symbols (chakra, shankha) integrated into the border."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"narrative","suggested_raga":"Desh","pace":"moderate-narrative","voice_tone":"reverent-soft","sound_elements":["morning birds","gentle bell","tanpura drone","leaf rustle"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: सुकर्मोवाच → सुकर्मः + उवाच (visarga sandhi: ḥ + u → o). कालोऽयं → कालः + अयं (visarga sandhi: ḥ + a → oऽ). कर्मयुक्तस्तु → कर्मयुक्तः + तु (visarga sandhi: ḥ + t → s + t). प्रेरयेत्कर्म → प्रेरयेत् + कर्म (t + k sandhi).

FAQs

It distinguishes between Time (kāla) as an impelling condition and the agent who actually performs karma, preserving moral agency and responsibility.

No. It affirms that Time prompts or motivates actions, but it is not the direct doer of those actions.

One should not excuse wrongdoing by blaming “time” or fate; individuals remain accountable for the actions they choose and perform.
