uvāca vānaro nāsti mama śuddhirmaheśvara | anekaphalabhoktṝtvādvānarastu kathaṃ śuciḥ || 178 ||
Vānara (the monkey)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: karuna
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It highlights humility and self-inquiry about śauca (purity): the speaker questions whether habitual consumption and conduct qualify one as “śuci,” setting up a teaching on what truly constitutes purity beyond mere identity or species.
Indirectly, it prepares the ground for bhakti-centered purification: recognizing one’s limitations and seeking guidance from the divine (here addressed as Maheśvara) is a classic devotional posture that precedes inner transformation.
The verse points to śauca as a practical dhārmic discipline relevant to kalpa-style ritual norms—how food-habits and daily conduct are evaluated when discussing cleanliness and eligibility for religious acts.
