The Narration of the Navamī Vow Observed Across the Twelve Months
śrāvaṇe māsi viprendra yaḥ kuryānnaktabhojanam | pakṣayorupavāsaṃ vā kaumārīṃ caṃḍikāṃ yajet || 13 ||
Narada
Vrata: Kaumārī-vrata (implied by subsequent verses; here the observance is introduced)
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It prescribes Śrāvaṇa-month austerities—night-only eating or fortnight-long fasting—paired with worship of Caṇḍikā (Kaumārī), presenting disciplined vrata as a means to accumulate puṇya and divine grace.
Bhakti here is expressed through regulated living (naktabhojana/upavāsa) and focused worship (yajet) of the deity-form Kaumārī Caṇḍikā, showing devotion as both inner resolve and outer ritual practice.
It applies calendrical discipline—observance tied to the lunar month Śrāvaṇa and the two pakṣas—reflecting practical Jyotiṣa-style timekeeping used to time vratas and worship.
