मार्कण्डेय उवाच प्राङ्मुखो भगवान् देवः कूर्मरूपी व्यवस्थितः ।

आक्रम्य भारतं वर्षं नवभेदमिदं द्विज ॥

മാർകണ്ഡേയൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ആ ഭഗവാൻ കൂർമരൂപത്തിൽ കിഴക്കോട്ടു മുഖം തിരിച്ച് നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. ഹേ ദ്വിജാ, ഭാരതവർഷത്തെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റി ഈ ഒൻപതു വിധ വിഭജനം ക്രമീകരിച്ചിരിക്കുന്നു।
