Dhaumya’s Counsel on Incognito Conduct in a Royal Household

Educational Q&A

The verse teaches proper royal protocol grounded in dharma: wise counsel should remain at the king’s side for guidance, while armed protection is stationed behind for security. It distinguishes the roles of intellect (advice) and force (guarding) and assigns each an appropriate place.

Dhaumya gives practical instruction about where a learned person should sit in relation to a king—on either flank—because the space behind the king is reserved for armed bodyguards. The statement functions as guidance on courtly arrangement and safety.
