मधुकैटभवधोपाख्यानम्

The Account of the Slaying of Madhu and Kaiṭabha

सदक्षिणस्य भुक्तस्य द्विजस्य तु करे गतम्‌ । यद्‌ वारि वारिणा सिज्चेत्‌ तद्धयेनस्तरते क्षणात्‌,ब्राह्मगके भोजन कर लेनेपर जो उसे दक्षिणा दी जाती है, उस समय उसके हाथमें जो प्रतिग्रहका जल रहता है, उसे दाता पुनः उत्सर्गके जलसे सींचे। ऐसा करनेसे वह तत्काल सब पापोंसे छूट जाता है

sadakṣiṇasya bhuktasya dvijasya tu kare gatam | yad vāri vāriṇā siñcet tad dhyenastarate kṣaṇāt ||

ബകൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ദക്ഷിണയോടുകൂടി ഭോജനം ചെയ്ത ദ്വിജന്റെ കൈയിൽ വന്ന പ്രതിഗ്രഹജലം, ദാതാവ് ഉത്സർഗജലംകൊണ്ട് വീണ്ടും തളിക്കണം; അങ്ങനെ ചെയ്താൽ അവൻ ക്ഷണത്തിൽ തന്നെ പാപത്തിൽ നിന്ന് കടന്നുമുക്തനാകും।

Educational Q&A

A gift is not only material but also moral and ritual: completing the act properly—by sprinkling the acceptance-water with release-water—purifies the donor and removes sin associated with giving, wealth, or imperfect intention.

Baka instructs on a specific post-feeding, post-dakṣiṇā rite: after the brāhmaṇa has eaten and received the dakṣiṇā, the donor should perform a concluding water act (utsarga) upon the water in the recipient’s hand, which is said to grant immediate freedom from sin.
