The Account of the Slaying of Madhu and Kaiṭabha
akulānāṁ kule bhāvaṁ kulīnāṁ kula-kṣayam | saṁyogaṁ viprayogaṁ ca paśyanti cirajīvinaḥ ||
The verse teaches the instability of worldly status and relationships: lineage, reputation, and human connections are subject to rise, decline, meeting, and separation. Recognizing this encourages humility, patience, and detachment rather than pride in birth or despair in adversity.
Baka is speaking reflectively, presenting an observation drawn from long experience: a long-lived being repeatedly witnesses social reversals (obscure families rising, noble families falling) and the continual cycle of union and separation among people.
