अध्याय ३९: विदुरेण धृतराष्ट्राय नीत्युपदेशः

Timely Counsel, Association, and Kin-Duty

इदं च त्वां सर्वपरं ब्रवीमि पुण्यं पद तात महाविशिष्टम्‌ । न जातु कामाजन्न भयान्न लोभाद्‌ धर्म जह्माज्जीवितस्यापि हेतो:,तात! अब मैं तुम्हें यह बहुत ही महत्त्वपूर्ण एवं सर्वोपरि पुण्यजनक बात बता रहा हूँ-- कामनासे, भयसे, लोभसे तथा इस जीवनके लिये भी कभी धर्मका त्याग न करे। धर्म नित्य है, किंतु सुख-दुःख अनित्य हैं। जीव नित्य है, पर इसका कारण अनित्य है। आप अनित्यको छोड़कर नित्यमें स्थित होइये और संतोष धारण कीजिये; क्योंकि संतोष ही सबसे बड़ा लाभ है

idaṃ ca tvāṃ sarvaparāṃ bravīmi puṇyaṃ pada tāta mahāviśiṣṭam | na jātu kāmāj na bhayān na lobhād dharmaṃ jahyāj jīvitasyāpi hetoḥ ||

താതാ! ഇപ്പോൾ ഞാൻ നിന്നോട് എല്ലാറ്റിലും പരമമായ, അത്യന്തം പുണ്യകരമായ ഉപദേശം പറയുന്നു—കാമം കൊണ്ടല്ല, ഭയം കൊണ്ടല്ല, ലോഭം കൊണ്ടല്ല; ജീവൻ രക്ഷിക്കാനായാലും ഒരിക്കലും ധർമ്മം ഉപേക്ഷിക്കരുത്.
