Vyāghra–Gomāyu Saṃvāda (व्याघ्रगोमायु संवाद) — Testing Character Beneath Appearances

apratyayakṛtāṁ gahrām irthāpanayadūṣitām | iha cāmutra cāniṣṭāṁ tasmād vṛttiṁ na rocaye ||

Bhīṣma

Educational Q&A

Bhīṣma teaches that one’s means of livelihood must be grounded in trustworthiness and dharma; otherwise it becomes blameworthy and yields harmful consequences both in this life and after death.

In the Śānti Parva’s instruction on dharma, Bhīṣma is advising on ethical conduct and proper ways of living, rejecting a corrupt or distrust-based livelihood as spiritually and socially destructive.
