अध्याय १: महाप्रस्थानारम्भः
The Commencement of the Great Departure
प्रस्थितान् द्रौपदीषष्ठान् पुरा द्यृूतजितान् यथा । हर्षोउभवच्च सर्वेषां भ्रातृणां गमन॑ प्रति,पहले जूएमें परास्त होकर पाण्डवलोग जिस प्रकार वनमें गये थे उसी प्रकार उस दिन द्रौपदीसहित उन नरोत्तम पाण्डवोंको इस प्रकार जाते देख नगरकी सभी स्त्रियाँ रोने लगीं। परन्तु उन सभी भाइयोंको इस यात्रासे महान् हर्ष हुआ
prasthitān draupadī-ṣaṣṭhān purā dyūtajitān yathā | harṣo 'bhavac ca sarveṣāṃ bhrātṝṇāṃ gamanaṃ prati ||
വൈശമ്പായനൻ പറഞ്ഞു—ദ്രൗപദിയെ ആറാമത്തിയായി കൂട്ടി ആ അഞ്ചു സഹോദരന്മാർ പ്രസ്ഥാനം ചെയ്തു; മുമ്പ് പാശകളിയിൽ തോറ്റു വനത്തിലേക്കുപോയതുപോലെ തന്നെയായിരുന്നു ആ ഗമനം. അവരെ പോകുന്നത് കണ്ടു നഗരത്തിലെ സ്ത്രീകൾ കരഞ്ഞു; എന്നാൽ ആ സഹോദരന്മാർക്കൊക്കെയും ഈ യാത്ര മഹാഹർഷത്തിന്റെ കാരണമായി.
