Austerity, regulated fasting, residual-eating, and hospitality
नष्ट देवलके दत्तमप्रतिष्ठं च वार्धुषे । यत्तु वाणिजके दत्तं नेह नामुत्र तद् भवेत्
Bhīṣma uvāca: naṣṭaṁ devalake dattam apratiṣṭhaṁ ca vārdhuṣe | yat tu vāṇijake dattaṁ neha nāmutra tad bhavet ||
ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു— ദേവാലയസേവനത്തിലൂടെ ജീവിക്കുന്നവന് നൽകിയ (പ്രത്യേകിച്ച് ശ്രാദ്ധ) ദാനം നശിക്കുന്നു. പലിശക്കാരന് നൽകിയതു സ്ഥിരഫലം തരുകയില്ല. വ്യാപാരിക്ക് നൽകിയതു ഇഹലോകത്തിലും പരലോകത്തിലും ഫലിക്കുകയില്ല.
