मार्तण्डस्यात्मजावेतौ संज्ञानासाविनिर्गतौ । नासत्य और दस्न--ये दोनों अश्विनीकुमारके नामसे प्रसिद्ध हैं। इनकी उत्पत्ति भगवान् सूर्यके वीर्यसे हुई है। ये अश्वरूपधारिणी संज्ञा देवीके नाकसे प्रकट हुऐ थे (ये सब मिलाकर तैंतीस देवता हैं)
mārtaṇḍasyātmajāv etau saṃjñānāsāvinirgatau | nāsatyau ca dasnau ca—etau dvāv aśvinīkumārau nāmnā prasiddhau | etayor utpattiḥ bhagavataḥ sūryasya vīryataḥ | aśvarūpadhāriṇyāḥ saṃjñādevyā nāsikāto nirgatāv iti | (ete sarve militvā trayastriṃśad devāḥ)
ഭീഷ്മൻ പറഞ്ഞു—“ഇവർ രണ്ടുപേരും മാർത്താണ്ഡൻ (സൂര്യൻ) എന്നവന്റെ പുത്രന്മാർ; അശ്വരൂപം ധരിച്ച സംജ്ഞാദേവിയുടെ നാസാരന്ധ്രങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നാണ് അവർ പ്രാദുർഭവിച്ചത്. നാസത്യനും ദസ്രനും—ഇവർ ഇരുവരും അശ്വിനീകുമാരന്മാർ എന്ന പേരിൽ പ്രസിദ്ധർ; ദിവാകരന്റെ വീര്യത്തിൽ നിന്നാണ് അവരുടെ ഉദ്ഭവം. ഇങ്ങനെ ഇവരും മുപ്പത്തിമൂന്നു ദേവന്മാരുടെ എണ്ണത്തിൽ ഉൾപ്പെടുന്നു।”
