Chapter 65 — सभास्थापनकथनं

Account of Establishing an Assembly-hall

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Jyotisha","secondary_vidya":"Arthashastra","practical_application":"Rule-of-thumb computation for balancing ‘income/exaction’ and ‘outgo’ and deriving a working total (kararāśi) used in subsequent divisions (e.g., by 7 and 8) for prognostic/allocative calculations.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Formula","entry_title":"Gaṇita: Sama-dvaya (Equalizing Two Sides) and Vasu-guṇa Kararāśi","lookup_keywords":["ayadhika","sama-dvaya","kararashi","vasu-guna","ganita"],"quick_summary":"Excess beyond proper intake causes distress; therefore equalize the two sides of the account, then compute the total ‘in-hand sum’ and scale it eightfold as the stated rule."}

Concept: Samatva in practical life: imbalance (excess extraction/overreach) yields duḥkha; regulated measure is a safeguard.

Application: Maintain parity between planned intake and obligations; use a fixed multiplier (eightfold) as a standardized step in the computational pipeline used by the tradition.

FAQs

A practical ganita (computational) rule: avoid excess that causes ‘pīḍā’ by equalizing the two sides of a calculation, and apply an eightfold (vasu-guṇa) multiplication to the total ‘kara-rāśi’ (aggregate amount).

It preserves applied technical instruction—numerical/proportional adjustment (and possibly fiscal computation)—showing the Agni Purana’s scope beyond mythology into mathematics, administration, and practical governance-oriented calculation.

By discouraging harmful excess (āyādhikya) that leads to oppression (pīḍā) and recommending balance (samatā), it aligns practical action with dharmic restraint—minimizing harm and promoting equitable conduct.
