इत्य् आदिमहापुराणे आग्नेये चतुर्विंशतिमूर्तिस्तोत्रं नाम अष्टाचत्वारिंशो ऽध्यायः अथोनपञ्चाशो ऽध्यायः मत्स्यादिलक्षणवर्णनं भगवानुवाच दशावतारं मत्स्यादिलक्षणं प्रवदामि ते मत्स्याकारस्तु मत्स्यः स्यात् कूर्मः कार्माकृलिर्भवेत्

ity ādimahāpurāṇe āgneye caturviṃśatimūrtistotraṃ nāma aṣṭācatvāriṃśo 'dhyāyaḥ athonapañcāśo 'dhyāyaḥ matsyādilakṣaṇavarṇanaṃ bhagavānuvāca daśāvatāraṃ matsyādilakṣaṇaṃ pravadāmi te matsyākārastu matsyaḥ syāt kūrmaḥ kārmākṛlirbhavet

ഇങ്ങനെ ആദിമഹാപുരാണമായ അഗ്നിപുരാണത്തിൽ ‘ചതുർവിംശതി-മൂർത്തി-സ്തോത്രം’ എന്ന അഷ്ടാചത്വാരിംശ അധ്യായം സമാപ്തമായി. ഇനി ഒൻപത്തൊമ്പതാം അധ്യായം—‘മത്സ്യാദി ലക്ഷണവർണ്ണനം’. ഭഗവാൻ അരുളിച്ചെയ്തു: മത്സ്യാദി ദശാവതാരങ്ങളുടെ ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ ഞാൻ നിനക്കു പറയുന്നു. മത്സ്യാകൃതിയുള്ളവൻ മത്സ്യൻ; കൂർമാകൃതിയുള്ളവൻ കൂർമൻ.
