Unaging are these, as oarsmen in the house; the smoke-bearing, purifying fires have shone forth. Bright-flaming, keen, impetuous, forest-dwelling—like winds, like Soma-streams.

Mantra 2

हर॑यो धू॒मके॑तवो॒ वात॑जूता॒ उप॒ द्यवि॑ । यत॑न्ते॒ वृथ॑ग॒ग्नय॑:

Tawny, smoke-bannered, wind-driven, the fires press upward to the sky; they strive forth in separate streams.

Two, of diverse form, move each for its own end; each in turn causeth the calf to draw near and suck. Tawny in the one it becometh, possessed of its own sustaining might; bright in the other it is seen, of fair splendour.

Mantra 6

For thee, the most gladdening, with hymn-flames have we chosen; hear thou us, O Agni, for our great (good). As (men) with bounty satisfy Indra by might, (and) Vāyu, so do the heroic satisfy thee with gifts.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a set of additional mantras for special-occasion ritual use, emphasizing Agni’s installation and conveyance, Indra’s obstruction-breaking power, Soma invitations, and the safeguarding of ṛta through Mitra–Varuṇa and Varuṇa’s oversight.

Because the cosmic act of breaking Vṛtra becomes a sacrificial model: the rite aims to ‘open what is obstructed’—restoring flow, vitality, and abundance for the sacrificer and community.

It functions as a ritual reminder that the sacrifice is performed under divine witness; purity, truthfulness, and right conduct are treated as necessary conditions for the rite’s protection and success.
