Unspilt, this day, may I duly gather the clarified butter for the Gods. With my step, O Viṣṇu, may I not tread upon thee; (upon) the bounteous (earth/ground). O Agni, may I abide in thy shade. O Viṣṇu, thou art a station indeed: Indra wrought valour; the sacrifice stood upright.

Mantra 9

Invoked am I: may Dyaus, the Father, call me hither; from the Āgnīdhra (seat) let Agni (come)—Svāhā! At the impulsion of the god Savitṛ I take thee, with the arms of the Aśvins, with the hands of Pūṣan. I receive thee; with Agni’s mouth I eat thee.

Mantra 12

By the impulsion of Agni and Soma, having won the victory, may I win thereafter the prize: by their impulsion I drive away (all hindrance) from myself for the gaining of strength. May Agni and Soma thrust away that man who hateth us, and whom we hate: by the impulsion (that bringeth) the prize I remove him hence. By the impulsion of Indra and Agni, having won the victory, may I win thereafter the prize: by their impulsion I drive away (all hindrance) from myself for the gaining of strength. May Indra and Agni thrust away that man who hateth us, and whom we hate: by the impulsion (that bringeth) the prize I remove him hence.

Unto the Vasus thee; unto the Rudras thee; unto the Ādityas thee. May Heaven and Earth bring thee into concord; may Mitra and Varuṇa endow thee with rain. Let the winged (powers), that gnaw and waste, be driven away. Go forth as the speckled (host) of the Maruts; as a barren cow, becoming Pṛśni, go to heaven; thence bring us rain. Thou, O Agni, art possessed of sight: guard thou mine eye.

Mantra 17

Ye gods, whose portion is the flowing (offering), steadfast, the mighty, most at home upon the prastara, and ye that are to be set around as the enclosing (paridhis):—all of you, praising this our speech, having sat down upon this barhis, rejoice ye! Svāhā! Vāṭ!

Ye are ghee-moving; being fit for the yoke, do ye twain protect (us). Abide ye in gracious favour; in gracious favour do ye set me. Thou art the Veda: by that whereby, O god, thou knowest, and whereby thou becamest Veda unto the gods—therewith may Veda be for me. Ye gods, knowers of the paths, having found the path, go ye upon the path. O Lord of Mind, do thou, O god, set this sacrifice—Svāhā!—in the Wind.

Let the sacred Barhis be anointed with the oblation, with ghee—together with the Ādityas, with the Vasus, together with the Maruts. Together may Indra, with the All-gods, anoint it: let that (offering), with the Svāhā, pass unto the heavenly firmament.

In heaven did Viṣṇu stride forth with the Jagatī metre: thence is he cut off—whoso hateth us, and whom we hate. In the mid-air did Viṣṇu stride forth with the Triṣṭubh metre: thence is he cut off—whoso hateth us, and whom we hate. On earth did Viṣṇu stride forth with the Gāyatrī metre: thence is he cut off—whoso hateth us, and whom we hate. Ye that bear strength—ambrosia, ghee, milk, the sweet drink, the well-strained draught—be ye Svadhā, and satiate for me the Fathers.

Frequently Asked Questions

It concentrates on the operative offering-procedures of Darśa–Pūrṇamāsa: consecrating supports, awakening and strengthening Agni, establishing boundaries, and executing protective formulas so the oblations proceed safely and effectively.

Because the yajña-space must be ritually secured: rakṣā mantras place the rite under Savitṛ–Bṛhaspati–Brahman guardianship, while apotropaic utterances explicitly drive away disruptive, Asuric threats that could impair the sacrifice.

Viṣṇu’s three strides are used to stabilize the three worlds, and the act is aligned with chandas (Gāyatrī, Triṣṭubh, Jagatī), expressing that cosmic order is upheld when the rite is performed in correct metrical and procedural form.
