तन्मे दहति गात्राणि शुष्कवृक्षमिवानल: । यदिच्छामि महाभाग त्वत्प्रसादात्‌ परंतप,कथयामास दुर्धर्षो विनि:श्वस्य पुनः पुनः । संजय कहते हैं--महाराज! शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाला राजा दुर्योधन उस महान्‌ युद्धमें एक राक्षसके द्वारा प्राप्त हुई अपनी पराजयको नहीं सह सका। उसने गंगानन्दन भीष्मजीके पास जाकर उन्हें विनीतभावसे प्रणाम करनेके पश्चात्‌ सारा वृत्तान्त यथावत्‌ रूपसे कह सुनाया। उस दुर्धर्ष वीरने बारंबार लम्बी साँस खींचकर घटोत्कचकी विजय और अपनी पराजयकी कथा कही “महाभाग! जैसे आग सूखे पेड़को जलाकर भस्म कर देती है, उसी प्रकार यह अपमान मेरे अंग-अंगको दग्ध कर रहा है। शत्रुओंको संताप देनेवाले पितामह! मैं आपकी कृपासे स्वयं ही उस नीच एवं दुर्धर्ष राक्षणको मारना चाहता हूँ। आपका सहारा लेकर उसपर विजयी होना चाहता हूँ। अत: आप मेरे इस मनोरथको पूर्ण करें”

sañjaya uvāca |

anme dahati gātrāṇi śuṣkavṛkṣam ivānalaḥ |

yad icchāmi mahābhāga tvatprasādāt paraṃtapa |

kathayāmāsa durdharṣo viniḥśvasya punaḥ punaḥ ||

ສັນຊະຍະກ່າວວ່າ: «ຄວາມອັບອາຍນີ້ເຜົາຜານອວັຍວະຂອງຂ້າພະເຈົ້າ ເຫມືອນໄຟເຜົາຕົ້ນໄມ້ແຫ້ງ. ໂອ ຜູ້ມີບຸນຍິ່ງ, ໂອ ຜູ້ເຜົາຜານສັດຕູ, ໂດຍພຣະກະລຸນາຂອງທ່ານ ຂ້າພະເຈົ້າປາດຖະໜາຈະໃຫ້ມັນສຳເລັດ.» ດັ່ງນັ້ນ ທຸຣະໂຍທະນະຜູ້ຍາກຈະປະລາຍ ຖອນຫາຍໃຈຍາວໆ ຊ້ຳໆ ເລົ່າເລື່ອງຂອງຕົນ—ຂໍພຶ່ງພາພີສະມະເພື່ອລ້າງອັບອາຍແຫ່ງຄວາມພ່າຍແພ້ ແລະກູ້ກຽດສັກສີຄືນ ໃນລະບຽບທາງທຳມະອັນເຂັ້ມງວດຂອງສົງຄາມ ທີ່ຄວາມທະນົງທີ່ຖືກທຳຮ້າຍອາດຜັກດັນໃຫ້ເກີດຄວາມຮຸນແຮງຕໍ່ໄປ.
