Aṣṭāvakra’s Visit to Kubera: Hospitality, Temptation, and the Ethics of Restraint (अष्टावक्र-वैश्रवणोपाख्यानम्)
वायुदेव उवाच उपमन्युर्मयि प्राह तपन्निव दिवाकर:
Vāyudeva uvāca: Upamanyur mayi prāha tapann iva divākaraḥ—“ye pāpakarmiṇaḥ manuṣyā aśubhācāraiḥ kaluṣitāḥ, te tamoguṇino vā rajoguṇino vā vṛttayaḥ santo bhagavataḥ Śivasya śaraṇaṃ na yānti.”
ວາຍຸເທວະ ກ່າວວ່າ: ໂອ ພະຣາຊາ! ອຸປະມັນຍຸ ຜູ້ລຸກໂຊດດ້ວຍຕະປະ ດັ່ງດວງອາທິດ ເຄີຍກ່າວກັບຂ້າວ່າ: “ຜູ້ຄົນທີ່ກະທຳບາບ ແລະຖືກເປື້ອນປົ່ນໂດຍການປະພຶດອັນອະສຸພ—ຜູ້ທີ່ມີນິໄສຖືກຄອບງຳໂດຍຕະມັສ ຫຼື ຣາຈັສ—ບໍ່ໄດ້ເຂົ້າພຶ່ງພາພຣະສິວະ.” ຄຳນີ້ວາງກອບໃຫ້ເຫັນວ່າ ຄວາມພັກດີຕໍ່ເທວະດາ ບໍ່ອາດແຍກອອກຈາກການຊຳລະຈິດໃຈແລະຄວາມແຈ້ງໃສພາຍໃນໄດ້.
वायुदेव उवाच
Ethical conduct and inner purification are prerequisites for genuine refuge in Śiva: those stained by sinful actions and driven by tamas or rajas fail to turn toward divine shelter.
Vāyudeva reports a prior instruction from the ascetic Upamanyu—described as radiant like the sun—about why morally tainted, tamasic/rajasic people do not seek Śiva’s refuge.
