Concept: Ritual causality through precise dravya, mantra, and saṅkhyā (count); the text treats outcomes as rule-governed effects of rite-technology.

Application: If used, requires strict adhikāra, ethical scrutiny, and counterbalancing śānti; in practice, many traditions redirect such procedures toward ‘doṣa-nivṛtti’ rather than harm.

FAQs

It prescribes a targeted homa: perform 1,000 ghee oblations, and additionally offer apāmārga-mixed rice grains using the śruva while uttering the offering-formula “devasya tvā,” for a specified effect.

It exemplifies the text’s practical catalog of applied rites—procedural counts (1,000 āhutis), materials (ghee, apāmārga, rice), implements (śruva), and mantric cues—showing how the Purana functions as a manual of ritual technologies alongside its many other disciplines.

The verse encodes a results-oriented (prayoga) rite: it uses offerings and mantra to invoke a forceful reversal of auspiciousness (lakṣmī), reflecting the Purana’s acknowledgment that ritual acts can be directed toward both pacifying and coercive outcomes, with correspondingly heavy karmic implications.
