purā yamastapastaptvā bahukālaṃ suduṣkaram | trailokyādhikṛtiṃ prāptastyaktvā vārāṇasīṃ purīm
Skanda (deduced: Kāśīkhaṇḍa commonly Skanda → Agastya)
Tirtha: Vārāṇasī/Kāśī
Type: kshetra
Listener: Brāhmaṇa interlocutor (implied from surrounding verses)
Scene: Yama performing fierce tapas in a desolate setting, then receiving triloka authority; yet a luminous boundary around Kāśī remains untouched, indicating his respectful withdrawal from the city’s sphere.
Even Yama’s cosmic authority has a boundary: Vārāṇasī is treated as a special divine jurisdiction linked to liberation.
Vārāṇasī (Kāśī), implied to be outside or exceptional to Yama’s ordinary reach.
No ritual is prescribed; the verse sets up theological context about Yama and Kāśī’s exceptional status.
