Account of the Birth/Origin of Vyāsa
sūta uvāca | ayameva mayā'kāri praśno vyāsāya dhīmate | tataḥ sarvapurāṇānāṃ mayā nirvacanaṃ śrutam
Suta Goswami
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Role: teaching
It establishes a reliable lineage of transmission: Sūta’s narration is grounded in what he heard from Vyāsa, affirming the Purāṇic teaching as a valid means to understand Dharma and, ultimately, the path to liberation under Śiva’s grace.
By emphasizing Vyāsa’s exposition of the Purāṇas, the verse supports Purāṇic authority for Saguna Śiva-upāsanā—such as Linga worship—presented as a scripturally sanctioned path that leads the bound soul (paśu) toward the Lord (Pati).
The practical takeaway is śravaṇa (devotional listening) to authentic scripture from a trustworthy source; this is a primary discipline that supports later practices like mantra-japa (e.g., Om Namaḥ Śivāya) and Linga-pūjā.
