Praise of Water-Gift and the Construction of Wells and Tanks
sanatkumāra uvāca | pānīyadānaṃ paramaṃ dānānāmuttamaṃ sadā | sarveṣāṃ jīvapuṃjānāṃ tarpaṇaṃ jīvanaṃ smṛtam
Sanatkumara
Tattva Level: pashu
Shakti Form: Annapūrṇā
Role: nurturing
It elevates pānīya-dāna (offering drinking water) as the highest charity because it directly sustains prāṇa (life-force) in all beings; in Shaiva ethics, protecting and nourishing life is a foremost expression of dharma and a form of reverence to Shiva as the indwelling Lord (Pati).
Serving living beings with life-sustaining water is treated as practical devotion: honoring Shiva present in all creatures. Such compassionate action supports Saguna worship by purifying the devotee’s mind, making Linga-pūjā more sattvic and inwardly aligned.
A simple practice is to offer clean drinking water—especially to travelers, the thirsty, or in hot seasons—as a vowed charity (dāna) alongside Shiva-japa (e.g., the Panchākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), dedicating the act to Shiva and praying for the welfare of all beings.
