Brāhmaṇas Follow into Exile and Śaunaka’s Instruction

vaiśampāyana uvāca | ity uktvā sa nṛpaḥ śocan niṣasāda mahītale | tam adhyātma-rato vidvān śaunako nāma vai dvijaḥ rājānam idam abravīt |

Educational Q&A

The verse frames ethical recovery from sorrow: when a ruler collapses into grief, guidance should come from a spiritually grounded, learned counselor—one who can balance action (karma) with discernment/knowledge (sāṅkhya/jñāna)—so that dharma can be restored through wise counsel rather than impulsive despair.

After speaking (in the preceding context), Yudhiṣṭhira, overwhelmed by sorrow, sits down on the earth. At that moment the sage-brāhmaṇa Śaunaka, described as devoted to adhyātma and learned in both paths of discipline, begins to address the king.
