Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Commentary","entry_title":"Chyuti in expected syllable-quantity; rejection of corrupt pāṭha-traya (svara-vyañjana-bindu-visarga vikṛti)","lookup_keywords":["chandas","laghu-guru","pāṭha-bheda","visarga-doṣa","bindu (anusvāra)"],"quick_summary":"When a syllable expected by rule to be of a certain quantity deviates, the deviation is classified (fourfold). Variant readings are rejected when corruption in vowels, consonants, anusvāra/bindu, or visarga makes them unsatisfactory."}

Concept: Śabda depends on accurate phoneme/diacritic transmission; metrical and phonetic rules serve as tools to detect textual corruption.

Application: For editors/reciters: verify readings by chandas and phonetics; correct anusvāra/visarga and vowel/consonant confusions before public recitation or copying.

FAQs

It teaches a prosodic/phonetic diagnostic: when a syllable’s expected quantity (e.g., laghu/guru) deviates due to rule-based requirements, the deviation is classified (as fourfold), and it warns that certain manuscript readings are unreliable due to phonetic-marker corruption (vowels, consonants, anusvāra/bindu, visarga).

Beyond theology and ritual, it preserves technical shastra knowledge—prosody, phonetics, and even principles of textual criticism—showing the Agni Purana’s coverage of Sanskrit literary sciences (chandas/shiksha) alongside other disciplines.

By emphasizing correct phonetic and metrical transmission, it supports accurate recitation and preservation of sacred knowledge, which traditional dharma views as essential for maintaining the intended efficacy (śakti) and merit (puṇya) of scriptural study and chanting.
