Chapter 338 — शृङ्गारादिरसनिरूपणम्
Exposition of the Rasas beginning with Śṛṅgāra
आद्यस्तस्य विकारो यः सो ऽहङ्कार इति स्मृतः ततो ऽभिमानस्तत्रेदं समाप्तं भुवनत्रयं
ādyastasya vikāro yaḥ so 'haṅkāra iti smṛtaḥ tato 'bhimānastatredaṃ samāptaṃ bhuvanatrayaṃ
Lord Agni (in instruction to sage Vasiṣṭha, typical Agni Purāṇa dialogue frame)
Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Philosophy","secondary_vidya":"Cosmology","practical_application":"Sankhya-based self-inquiry: distinguish Prakriti’s evolutes (ahaṅkāra, abhimāna) from the witnessing Self to reduce ego-identification and interpret experience as a product of tattvas.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Definition","entry_title":"Ahaṅkāra as Prakṛti’s first vikāra and its cosmic scope","lookup_keywords":["ahaṅkāra","vikāra","abhimāna","prakṛti-pariṇāma","bhuvana-traya"],"quick_summary":"Defines ahaṅkāra as the first transformation of primordial nature and links abhimāna (self-identification) to the manifested cosmos, framing world-experience as an ego-mediated construction."}
Concept: Ahaṅkāra/abhimāna as the key mediating evolute through which the triad of worlds is apprehended; the cosmos is comprehended within egoic appropriation.
Application: Practice viveka: label thoughts of ‘I’/‘mine’ as ahaṅkāra-abhimāna, returning attention to the witness to weaken bondage.

Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A metaphysical diagram-like scene: Prakṛti as the primordial matrix giving rise to ahaṅkāra, then abhimāna, expanding into the three worlds (heaven, mid-space, earth) as concentric realms.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style, flat vibrant colors, sacred cosmology tableau: Prakriti as a luminous lotus-matrix, from it a personified Ahaṅkāra figure, then Abhimāna as a haloed silhouette, three-tiered universe stacked above and below, ornate borders, temple mural aesthetics.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting with gold leaf: central golden lotus labeled Prakṛti, emanating a smaller gilded medallion Ahaṅkāra, then Abhimāna, with three gilded registers for bhuvana-traya, rich reds and greens, embossed ornaments.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting style, instructional cosmology chart: clean lines, soft shading, labeled nodes (Prakṛti→Ahaṅkāra→Abhimāna→Bhuvana-traya), delicate floral motifs, muted palette, didactic composition.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, fine brushwork: allegorical court scene where a veiled ‘Nature’ figure releases a scroll of emanations; three-world landscape in background (sky palace, aerial realm, earthly city), calligraphic labels, intricate borders."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"contemplative","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"slow","voice_tone":"contemplative"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: so 'haṅkāra = saḥ + ahaṅkāraḥ; tato 'bhimānaḥ = tataḥ + abhimānaḥ; tatredaṃ = tatra + idam; bhuvanatrayam treated as dvigu compound bhuvana-trayam.

It imparts Sāṅkhya-tattva knowledge: ahaṅkāra is defined as the first evolute (vikāra) and the basis for abhimāna (self-identification), through which the manifested universe (including the three worlds) is understood.
Alongside ritual and dharma topics, the Agni Purāṇa preserves systematic philosophy (Sāṅkhya-style cosmology), giving concise definitions of core tattvas like ahaṅkāra and linking them to the structure of the cosmos (bhuvanatraya).
By identifying ego (ahaṅkāra) and self-appropriation (abhimāna) as foundational to worldly experience, the verse supports detachment and discernment, aiding liberation-oriented practice by reducing identification with the three-worldly sphere.
