Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Cosmology","secondary_vidya":"Philosophy","practical_application":"Serves as a doctrinal checklist for Sāṅkhya-based cosmology: Mahat → ahaṅkāra (threefold by guṇas), useful for teaching, debate, and meditative self-analysis of ego modes.","sutra_style":true}
Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"List","entry_title":"Mahat and Trividha Ahaṅkāra (Vaikārika–Taijasa–Bhūtādi)","lookup_keywords":["mahat-tattva","ahankara","vaikarika","taijasa","bhutadi"],"quick_summary":"Cosmic evolution begins with Mahat, followed by ahaṅkāra. Ahaṅkāra is classified into sāttvika (vaikārika), rājasa (taijasa), and tāmasa (bhūtādi), which later generate mind/senses and elements."}
Concept: Guṇa-differentiated egoity is the pivot between Mahat and subsequent evolutes; sāttvika/rājasa/tāmasa functions explain cognition, action, and materialization.
Application: Introspectively label ego-states: clarity (sattva), agitation (rajas), inertia/obscuration (tamas); cultivate sattva to steady mind and senses.

Related Themes: Agni Purana 17.4-17.6 (tanmātra–bhūta–indriya genesis)
It imparts Sāṅkhya-based cosmological knowledge: the sequential emergence of Mahat and the threefold ahaṅkāra (sāttvika, rājasa, tāmasa), a technical map used to explain how mind, senses, and elements arise.
By incorporating Sāṅkhya metaphysics (tattva-evolution) alongside other practical disciplines in the text, it shows the Agni Purana’s encyclopedic scope—preserving philosophical frameworks used across theology, yoga, and ritual theory.
Understanding the rise of ego (ahaṅkāra) from cosmic intelligence (Mahat) supports detachment and self-inquiry: it frames the ‘I’-sense as a produced principle, aiding spiritual discrimination (viveka) and reducing karmic entanglement.
