Sūta Gosvāmin (narrating the battle account to the sages at Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Cosmic Event: Māyā-vikṛti motif: gigantic form assumed through illusion, signaling distortion of perception in the field of māyā.
It highlights that vastness and terror in battle can be a projection of māyā; Shaiva Siddhānta stresses that only Shiva, the supreme Pati, is ultimately independent, while all manifested forms—even enormous ones—are contingent and knowable through right discernment and devotion.
By contrasting an immense, changeable māyā-form with the steadiness of Shiva’s worship, it points devotees toward the Linga as a stable focus for Saguna upāsanā, through which the mind is led beyond appearances toward Shiva’s transcendence.
Practice japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) with steady dhyāna on Shiva/Linga to cultivate viveka (discernment) so that intimidating or alluring appearances of māyā do not disturb devotion.
