Mantra 1
पुरोजिती वो अन्धसः सुताय मादयित्नवे अप श्वानं श्नथिष्टन सखायो दीर्घजिह्व्यम्
Foremost-conquering is your pressed Soma-juice for exhilaration; smite away, O friends, the long-tongued hound.
Mantra 2
अयं पूषा रयिर्भगः सोमः पुनानो अर्षति पतिर्विश्वस्य भूमनो व्यख्यद्रोदसी उभे
This Soma, being purified, floweth on; he is Pūṣan, he is wealth, he is Bhaga; the lord of all abundance: he hath made both heaven and earth manifest (by his might) in the sacrifice.
Mantra 3
सुतासो मधुमत्तमाः सोमा इन्द्राय मन्दिनः पवित्रवन्तो अक्षरन्देवान्गच्छन्तु वो मदाः
The expressed Somes, most sweet, exhilarating for Indra, furnished with the filter, have flowed forth: let your raptures (of Soma) go unto the gods.
Mantra 4
सोमाः पवन्त इन्दवो ऽस्मभ्यं गातुवित्तमाः मित्राः स्वाना अरेपसः स्वाध्यः स्वर्विदः
The Soma-drops are purified; for us they are the best finders of the way: friendly, sounding as they flow, stainless, of good sacred utterance, bestowers of heavenly light.
Mantra 5
अभी नो वाजसातमं रयिमर्ष शतस्पृहम् इन्दो सहस्रभर्णसं तुविद्युम्नं विभासहम्
Flow hither unto us, O Indu, that wealth which is most victorious in the winning of strength, greatly coveted; thou of thousandfold splendour, of abundant glory, widely shining.
Mantra 6
अभी नवन्ते अद्रुहः प्रियमिन्द्रस्य काम्यम् वत्सं न पूर्व आयुनि जातं रिहन्ति मातरः
The faithful (worshippers) celebrate that which is dear and desirable to Indra; as mothers lick the calf born in its former season of life, so do they cherish (the Soma).
Mantra 7
आ हर्यताय धृष्णवे धनुष्टन्वन्ति पौंस्यम् शुक्रा वि यन्त्यसुराय निर्णिजे विपामग्रे महीयुवः
Unto the golden and the bold they stretch the bow of manly prowess; the bright (streams) go forth for the mighty lord, for purification, in the presence of the singers, vigorous in their course.
Mantra 8
परि त्यं हर्यतं हरिं बभ्रुं पुनन्ति वारेण यो देवान्विश्वां इत्परि मदेन सह गच्छति
They cleanse all around that delightful tawny, ruddy (Soma) with water; he who, with exhilaration, goeth indeed unto all the gods.
Mantra 9
प्र सुन्वानास्यान्धसो मर्तो न वष्ट तद्वचः अप श्वानमराधसं हता मखं न भृगवः
Forth art thou pressed of the juice; the mortal desireth that sacred utterance: drive ye away the dog, the irreverent; smite him, as the Bhṛgus (guarded) the sacrifice.
The ‘hound’ is a ritual image for a defiling or obstructing force (often explained as rakṣas-like). The singers command it to be expelled so Soma and the sacrifice remain pure and effective.
Soma is asked to flow toward the priests and vessels in a purified stream, bringing exhilaration, victorious strength (vāja), and desirable wealth (rayi), while protecting the sacred utterance and the rite.
The Bhṛgus are an ancient seer-group associated with safeguarding sacrificial order. They are cited as a model: just as they protected the sacrifice, the priests should strike down/drive off whatever threatens it.
