FAQs

This verse imparts vamsha-jnana (genealogical knowledge): a precise succession of royal ancestors used for Itihasa–Purana memory, dynastic mapping, and contextualizing later narratives.

By cataloging lineages with name-variants (e.g., Vidūratha also called Udarka), it functions like a historical index—one of the Agni Purana’s encyclopedic modes alongside ritual, polity, medicine, and arts.

Preserving and reciting righteous lineages is treated in Purāṇic tradition as smṛti-dharma support: it sustains sacred history, inspires dharmic kingship ideals, and is considered meritorious as Itihasa–Purana śravaṇa.
