Lord Agni (narrating ritual procedure to the sage Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purana’s instructional frame)

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Mandala/altar setup: placing all useful items in the Vāyu precinct (vāyugocara), touching them with the mūla-mantra, and performing adhivāsa to sanctify ritual materials before use.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Vāyu-gocara Sthāpana and Mūla-mantra Sparśa for Adhivāsa","lookup_keywords":["vāyugocara","mūla-mantra","sparśa","sthāpana","adhivāsa"],"quick_summary":"All auxiliary items are arranged in the Vāyu-designated sector; they are ritually ‘activated’ by mūla-mantra touch and then placed under adhivāsa for pre-consecration."}

Concept: Mantra confers saṃskāra: by mūla-mantra contact (sparśa) objects become fit (yogya) for sacred use; space is ritually differentiated (vāyugocara).

Application: In a pūjā/dīkṣā setup, pre-assign sectors, keep all tools within the correct precinct, and perform mantra-touch plus adhivāsa so materials are not ‘unconsecrated’ during the rite.

Khanda Section: Puja-vidhi (Mantra-nyasa, Mandala/Altar setup, Adhivasa rites)

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A ritual mandala space divided into directional precincts; the Vāyu sector holds arranged implements. The officiant touches each item with the right hand while silently/softly reciting the root-mantra, then performs adhivāsa.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, clear directional zoning around a mandala, Vāyu corner emphasized with greenish tones, priest touching vessels/tools with mantra gesture, stylized sacred geometry, subdued temple interior","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore style, gold-highlighted mandala border, priest performing mantra-sparśa over neatly arranged items in a designated corner, rich ornaments on vessels, luminous sanctity","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting, didactic layout: mandala with quadrant labels implied by color, Vāyu precinct with tools, priest’s hand in sparśa mudrā, crisp lines and gentle gradients","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, top-down angled view of a chamber with a geometric floor diagram, items grouped in one sector, officiant touching them sequentially, fine detailing of containers and powders"}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Shuddha Sarang","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: अन्यदपि = अन्यत् + अपि; अप्युपयोगि = अपि + उपयोगि; तद्वायुगोचरे = तत् + वायुगोचरे; मूलमन्त्रेण = मूल + मन्त्रेण; परामृश्याधिवाधिवासयेत् is segmented as परामृश्य + अधिवा + अधिवासयेत् (reading assumes 'अधिवा' as avyaya; possible textual variants exist).

FAQs

It instructs the practitioner to place all ancillary ritual implements in the Vāyu-sector of the ritual ground, then energize them by touching with the deity’s mūla-mantra, and finally sanctify them through the adhivāsa (pre-consecration) rite.

Beyond mythology, the Agni Purana preserves step-by-step operational ritual protocols—spatial zoning (directional sectors like Vāyu-gocara), mantra-activation (mūla-mantra), and consecration preliminaries (adhivāsa)—showing its coverage of applied temple liturgy and ceremonial technology.

By mantra-touch and adhivāsa, the materials are ritually purified and made fit as offerings/implements, aligning the rite with cosmic order (directional deities) and reducing impurity or procedural fault (doṣa) in worship.
