Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Īśāna
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It presents a peaceful, eastern-facing aspect of Śiva’s divine governance, teaching that serenity (śānti) and humble devotion—especially reverence to Śiva’s feet—purify the bound soul (paśu) and loosen the bonds (pāśa) that obstruct liberation.
By describing Śiva through a specific face-direction and qualities, the verse supports Saguna upāsanā—approaching the formless Lord through a worshipful form and attributes—commonly expressed in Liṅga worship and in devotional pādārcana as a concrete focus for surrender.
Practice pādārcana—offer water, flowers, and mantra-recitation at Śiva’s feet or the base of the Liṅga—cultivating śānti (inner calm); japa of the Pañcākṣarī (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) fits this mood of peaceful devotion.
