It teaches that mantra-realization is not merely verbal repetition but a disciplined preparatory sādhana (puraścaraṇa) that purifies the pashu (bound soul) and makes the mantra effective as a means toward Shiva’s grace and liberation.
In Saguna Shiva worship—such as Linga-pūjā—the mantra is ‘applied’ through viniyoga (nyāsa, offerings, japa linked to worship). The verse says that before such application, one should complete the foundational preparation so the worship becomes inwardly aligned and spiritually potent.
It points to puraścaraṇa of the mūla-mantra (often the Panchākṣarī, “Om Namaḥ Śivāya”), undertaken as a preliminary vow-based regimen of japa and allied disciplines before performing the mantra’s formal viniyoga in worship.
