Bāṇāsura’s Wrathful Command and the Onset of Battle at the Inner Palace
kuṃbhāṃḍa uvāca | kosi kasyāsi re vīra satyaṃ vada mamāgrataḥ | kena vā tvamihānīto durācāra narādhama
Kumbhāṇḍa
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Rudra
The verse highlights dharmic accountability in conflict: one must state one’s identity and allegiance truthfully, implying that actions and loyalties (to Pati—Śiva, or to adharma) have consequences.
Though not directly about the Liṅga, the demand for truthful self-disclosure reflects the Shaiva ethic that devotion to Saguna Śiva is expressed through satya (truthfulness) and right conduct, not merely through outward ritual.
A practical takeaway is satya-vrata (a vow of truth) alongside japa of the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” cultivating inner purity so one’s speech and allegiance align with Śiva-dharma.
