Girijā’s Austerity-Test and the Summoning of the Seven Sages
किमर्थं संस्मृता वाथ शासनं देहि तद्धि नः । स्वदाससदृशीं स्वामिन्कृपां कुरु नमोऽस्तु ते
kimarthaṃ saṃsmṛtā vātha śāsanaṃ dehi taddhi naḥ | svadāsasadṛśīṃ svāminkṛpāṃ kuru namo'stu te
Shiva’s attendants (Gaṇas) addressing Lord Shiva
Tattva Level: pashu
Shiva Form: Mahādeva
Mantra: नमोऽस्तु ते
Type: stotra
It models dāsabhāva (the attitude of being Shiva’s servant): the devotee seeks only Shiva’s instruction and relies on his kṛpā (grace), which in Shaiva Siddhanta is essential for liberation beyond mere personal effort.
The verse expresses surrender to the personal Lord (Saguna Shiva) as a compassionate master; such surrender is central in Linga-worship where the devotee approaches Shiva for guidance, purification, and anugraha (bestowing grace).
A practical takeaway is daily prayerful surrender before Shiva—mentally offering oneself as a servant, reciting “Om Namaḥ Śivāya,” and asking for Shiva’s śāsana (inner guidance) before japa, pūjā, or meditation.
