Hanuman’s Circuit of Ravana’s Palace and the Crisis of Deliberation
एवं बहुविधं दुःखं मनसा धरायन्मुहुः।।।।नाध्यगच्छत्तदा पारं शोकस्य कपिकुञ्चरः।
evaṃ bahuvidhaṃ duḥkhaṃ manasā dhārayan muhuḥ |
nādhyagacchat tadā pāraṃ śokasya kapikuñjaraḥ ||
かくして、さまざまな苦しみを心に幾度も抱え、猿たちの中の象たる者は、その悲しみの彼岸—終わり—にその時なお至らなかった。
The elephant among monkeys (Hanuman) worrying over and over again, holding his head for long could not reach the end of his grief.
Acknowledging human emotion within dharma: even the greatest servant can be overwhelmed; the ethical movement is to recognize grief yet not be ruled by it.
The narrator describes Hanuman’s prolonged mental suffering as he struggles to find a way forward.
Inner struggle preceding renewal: the verse sets up Hanuman’s eventual return to clarity and purposeful action.
