Crossing the Gaṅgā; Sumantra’s Return; Adoption of Ascetic Signs
निवर्तस्वेत्युवाचैव ह्येतावद्धि कृतं मम।रथं विहाय पद्भ्यां तु गमिष्यामि महावनम्।।2.52.14।।
nivartasvety uvācaiva hy etāvad dhi kṛtaṃ mama | rathaṃ vihāya padbhyāṃ tu gamiṣyāmi mahāvanam ||
彼は言った。「戻れ。ここまでで、そなたは十分に尽くしてくれた。車を置き、我は徒歩で大いなる森へ入ろう。」
Rama and Lakshmana then put on their quivers, fastened their swords and holding their bows went towards Ganga along with Sita.
Acceptance of vowed duty: Rāma embraces the hardship of exile without clinging to royal comforts, aligning action with truth and obligation.
Rāma formally ends Sumantra’s escort and declares his intention to proceed into the forest on foot.
Tyāga (renunciation) and steadfastness: Rāma chooses simplicity and hardship as required by his dharma.
