Virādha-saṃvādaḥ — Encounter with Virādha in the Daṇḍakāraṇya

गम्भीराक्षं महावक्त्रं विकटं विषमोदरम्।बीभत्सं विषमं दीर्घं विकृतं घोरदर्शनम्।।।।
gambhīrākṣaṃ mahāvaktraṃ vikaṭaṃ viṣamodaram | bībhatsaṃ viṣamaṃ dīrghaṃ vikṛtaṃ ghoradarśanam ||
その眼は深く落ちくぼみ、顔は巨大で、異様に醜く、腹は不格好に突き出ていた。忌まわしく、歪で、ひどく背が高く、ねじれた姿は見るだに恐ろしかった。
He was of dreadful appearance with deep eyes, a huge face and a big belly. He looked tall, ugly and frightening.
The text contrasts the frightening form of adharma with the calm duty of the righteous: recognizing moral disorder often begins with perceiving its violent, predatory nature.
The narrator intensifies the scene by detailing Virādha’s terrifying physical features.
Discernment—seeing danger clearly without panic is implied as the heroes face the grotesque threat.
