The Greatness of Haridvāra
Gaṅgādvāra-māhātmya
तच्छत्वा भगवानाह न श्रेयो गमनं ततः । अथ देवमनादृत्य भाविनोऽर्थस्य गौरवात् ॥ ११ ॥
tacchatvā bhagavānāha na śreyo gamanaṃ tataḥ | atha devamanādṛtya bhāvino'rthasya gauravāt || 11 ||
それを聞いて、福徳なる主は言われた。「そこへ行くのは益にならぬ。」しかし、約束された利得を重んじるあまり、主の言葉を顧みず、なお進んで行った。
Bhagavan (the Lord) speaking within the narrative (as relayed in the Uttara-Bhaga Tirtha-Mahatmya section)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: karuna
It highlights a core Purāṇic lesson: when divine guidance is ignored due to attachment to expected future gain, one departs from śreyas (true good) and moves toward avoidable suffering or spiritual loss.
Bhakti is expressed as attentive obedience and trust in the Lord’s instruction; the verse contrasts this with a mind pulled by bhāvī-artha (anticipated reward), which weakens surrender and right discernment.
The practical takeaway is ethical discernment (viveka) applied to action—choosing śreyas over preyas—rather than a specific Vedāṅga technique; it functions as a dharma-guideline within a tirtha-mahātmya narrative.
