Kārtika-Māhātmya
The Greatness of Kārtika
एकतः सर्वदानानि दीपदानं हि चैकतः । कार्तिकेन समं प्रोक्तं दीपदानात्प्रबोधनम् ॥ ३६ ॥
ekataḥ sarvadānāni dīpadānaṃ hi caikataḥ | kārtikena samaṃ proktaṃ dīpadānātprabodhanam || 36 ||
一方にはあらゆる施しがあり、他方にはただ灯明の布施のみがある。灯明供養によって功徳と吉祥が目覚めることは、カルティカ月全体の功徳に等しいと宣言される。
Narada (teaching within the Kārtika-vrata and dīpa-dāna context)
Vrata: Kārtika-vrata (contextual)
Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It elevates dīpa-dāna (offering a lamp) as an exceptionally potent dharmic act, stating its fruit can equal the sanctifying merit associated with the whole of Kārtika—symbolizing inner awakening and the dispelling of ignorance.
By praising a simple, accessible offering (a lamp), the verse points to bhakti expressed through humble ritual service—light offered with reverence becomes a devotional act that awakens auspiciousness and spiritual clarity.
Ritual timing and vrata-practice are emphasized: the month of Kārtika is treated as a sacred calendar period for specific observances, showing applied dharma through proper kāla (time) selection and prescribed dāna.
