Kārtika-Māhātmya
The Greatness of Kārtika
न व्रती कार्तिके जातो मुक्त्वैकं हरिवासरम् । सोऽहं कार्तिकमिच्छामि व्रते न पर्य्युपासितुम् ॥ ३० ॥
na vratī kārtike jāto muktvaikaṃ harivāsaram | so'haṃ kārtikamicchāmi vrate na paryyupāsitum || 30 ||
カールティカ月において、生まれながらに誓戒を守る者はなく、ただハリに捧げられた唯一の日のみが例外である。ゆえに私はカールティカの誓(ヴラタ)を受け、正しく修行したい。
Narada
Vrata: Kārtika-vrata
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It highlights Kārtika as a special devotional season where disciplined observance (vrata) centered on Hari is emphasized, presenting Hari’s sacred day as uniquely potent and motivating full Kārtika-vrata practice.
By focusing on “Harivāsara” (Hari’s day) and the wish to observe Kārtika as a vow, the verse frames Bhakti as regular, time-bound worship and restraint dedicated to Viṣṇu/Hari rather than mere sentiment.
It implicitly relies on calendrical and ritual timing (Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa) by stressing the sacred month (Kārtika) and the specific Viṣṇu-day (Harivāsara/Ekādaśī) for structuring vrata observance.
