Adhyaya 84 — The Gods’ Hymn after the Slaying of Mahishasura and the Goddess’ Boon
devā ūcuḥ | bhagavatyā kṛtaṃ sarvaṃ na kiñcid avaśiṣyate | yad ayaṃ nihataḥ śatrur asmākaṃ mahiṣāsuraḥ ||
Evil is framed as a cosmic obstruction; its removal is not merely martial but restorative—returning rightful shares (yajña-bhāga) and order to the worlds.
This is a Manvantara-linked kathā (narrative) illustrating divine governance and protection; it supports the purāṇic function of dharma-sthāpana.
Mahiṣa symbolizes tamas and brute instinct; Devī’s victory indicates the triumph of awakened consciousness (śakti) over inertia and delusion.
