Adhyaya 84 — The Gods’ Hymn after the Slaying of Mahishasura and the Goddess’ Boon
saumyāni yāni rūpāṇi trailokye vicaranti te / yāni cātyarthaghorāṇi tai rakṣāsmāṃstathā bhuvam

The divine is not limited to a single mood: gentleness nurtures and terribleness restrains harm—both serve protection of life and the world.
Theological stotra within narrative (carita), emphasizing the Purāṇic function of devotion and protection rather than cosmological accounting.
Saumya/ghora reflect complementary inner energies: soothing integration and fierce purification; both are invoked for wholeness and stability of ‘earth’ (the embodied condition).
