Draupadī Awakens Bhīmasena

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights the ethical collapse that occurs when power is unchecked and public authority fails to protect the vulnerable. An assault committed openly in the king’s court becomes a critique of negligent kingship: dharma requires rulers and institutions to restrain wrongdoing, not merely witness it.

Draupadī (as Kṛṣṇā), distressed, responds to Sudeshnā’s questioning and explains the cause of her tears: when she went to fetch liquor, Kīcaka attacked her in the royal hall in full view of the king, likening it to an assault in a deserted forest—underscoring both violence and the court’s failure to intervene.
