Draupadī on Action, Fate, and Human Effort
na hārjunasamaḥ kaścid yudhi yoddhā dhanurdharaḥ | bhavitā vā pumān kaścin matsamo vā gadādharaḥ ||
The verse underscores the ideal of kṣatriya martial excellence: certain warriors embody unsurpassed skill, and acknowledging such excellence can strengthen morale and clarity of purpose in a righteous struggle. It also hints at the role of destiny—‘now or in the future’—in framing human limits and exceptional capability.
Vaiśampāyana, narrating the epic events, reports a forceful assertion that no archer equals Arjuna in battle and that no mace-wielder equals the speaker. The line serves to establish comparative prowess and to heighten the epic’s tension by emphasizing the extraordinary caliber of the principal fighters.
