Bhīṣma’s Admonition; Duryodhana’s Rājasūya Aspiration and the Proposal of a Vaiṣṇava-satra
गोरसानुपयुञ्जान उपभोगांश्व भारत । पश्यन् स रमणीयानि वनान्युपवनानि च
gorasa-anupayuñjāna upabhogān śva bhārata | paśyan sa ramaṇīyāni vanāny upavanāni ca ||
ヴァイシャンパーヤナは語った。「おおバーラタよ。乳の滋味を味わい、さまざまな快楽に耽りつつ、彼はそこにある麗しき森と木立を眺め始めた。」物語の流れにおいてこの句は、自然の美のただ中で安逸に身を委ねるドゥルヨーダナの姿を際立たせ、林住に求められる苦行と節制との倫理的対照を成し、快楽と驕りが判断を鈍らせ争いを招くことを予兆する。
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse implicitly contrasts self-indulgent enjoyment with the restraint and humility associated with dharmic conduct, especially in a forest setting; pleasure and pride can obscure judgment and set the stage for wrongdoing.
Vaiśampāyana describes Duryodhana (with his party implied by context) consuming rich dairy foods and enjoying pleasures while admiring the beauty of the forests and groves as he moves through the wilderness.
