Duryodhana’s Śaraṇāgati and the Pāṇḍavas’ Resolve

Educational Q&A

The passage highlights disciplined divine governance: Varuṇa, emblematic of moral and cosmic order, advances slowly with the pāśa (noose), implying that restraint, accountability, and lawful control—rather than impulsive violence—sustain dharma.

Mārkaṇḍeya describes Varuṇa, lord of the waters, moving forward while surrounding a triśūla (trident), accompanied by many kinds of aquatic creatures, creating a vivid tableau of a powerful deity approaching with his retinue and instruments of authority.
