Indra’s Distress: Slaying of Triśiras, Birth of Vṛtra, and the Origin of Yawning
कि कार्यमिति वै राजन् विचिन्त्य भयमोहिता: । जग्मु: सर्वे महात्मानं मनोभिर्विष्णुमव्ययम् । उपविष्टा मन्दराग्रये सर्वे वृत्रवधेप्सव:
kiṁ kāryam iti vai rājan vicintya bhaya-mohitāḥ | jagmuḥ sarve mahātmānaṁ manobhir viṣṇum avyayam | upaviṣṭā mandarāgrye sarve vṛtra-vadhepsavaḥ |
「いま何をなすべきか、王よ」――恐怖に惑わされ、彼らは熟慮した。やがて一同は心のうちに、偉大にして不滅のヴィシュヌに帰依した。ヴリトラ討滅を願い、マンダラ山の頂にて、決意を凝らし坐して瞑想に入った。
शल्य उवाच
When fear clouds judgment, mere strategizing is insufficient; one should first regain clarity by taking refuge in the imperishable divine principle (Viṣṇu), and then act with steady resolve toward a righteous objective.
Overwhelmed by fear, the group deliberates about the next step and then, inwardly turning to Viṣṇu, they seat themselves on Mount Mandara with focused intent, seeking divine support for the slaying of Vṛtra.
