Amba–Rama–Bhishma Dialogue on Vow and Refuge
pāṇḍraiś cāpi vyajanaīr vījyamāno narādhipa | śuklavāsāḥ sitoṣṇīṣaḥ sarvaśuklavibhūṣaṇaḥ ||
The verse highlights how external insignia—white garments, turban, ornaments, and ceremonial fanning—signal recognized status and honor in a royal setting; it implicitly contrasts outward splendor with the inner responsibility of dharma that such honor demands.
Bhīṣma describes a scene of formal royal ceremony: he is attended with white chowries and appears entirely in white attire and adornment, emphasizing the dignity and public recognition surrounding him at that moment.
