Vasiṣṭha–Karāla-Janaka Saṃvāda: Aśuddha-Sevana, Guṇa-Dr̥ṣṭi, and Sāṃkhya–Yoga Ekārthatā
Mahābhārata 12.293
tasmād guṇeṣu rajyethā mā doṣeṣu kadācana | anityam iha martyānāṃ jīvitaṃ hi calācalam ||
Choose attachment to virtues (guṇa) and refuse attachment to faults (doṣa). The reason given is the impermanence and instability of human life; since life is fleeting, one should invest attention and affection in what elevates character rather than in what degrades it.
Parāśara is delivering moral instruction within the Śānti Parva’s didactic setting, emphasizing ethical cultivation and a sober awareness of mortality as the basis for right conduct.
